Balance of Dasha

Balance of Dasha is the remaining portion of the birth Nakshatra's Dasha lord period at the time of birth, which starts the Vimshottari Dasha sequence.

What is Balance of Dasha?

At birth, the Moon occupies a specific Nakshatra, and the Dasha lord of that Nakshatra is the first Mahadasha lord. However, since birth rarely coincides with the Nakshatra's start, only a fraction of that first Mahadasha remains. This fraction is the Balance of Dasha, calculated from the Moon's exact position within the Nakshatra. For example, if the Moon is at 60% of Rohini (Venus-ruled), only 40% of Venus Mahadasha remains — about 8 years of the 20-year Venus period. This balance determines the exact starting point for all subsequent Dasha periods.
