Essential Dignity (The Five Dignities)

The classical five-fold measure of how much 'at home' a planet is in a given degree — combining rulership, exaltation, triplicity, term (bound), and face (decan), with debility counterparts detriment, fall, and peregrine.

What is Essential Dignity (The Five Dignities)?

Essential dignity, codified by Ptolemy and refined by medieval astrologers, is a layered system rather than a single score. Strongest to weakest: Rulership / Domicile (planet in its own sign, full authority); Exaltation (peak expression, refined but can overreach); Triplicity (elemental affinity, reliable modest support); Term / Bound (degree-based Egyptian lord, subtle modifier); Face / Decan (10° segment rulership, faintest). The debility counterparts: Detriment (opposite sign, against its nature); Fall (opposite exaltation, humbled); Peregrine (no dignity at all, wandering). A practitioner reads all five in layers — a planet can be peregrine in rulership terms yet still gain triplicity strength.

How TriAstra Uses Essential Dignity (The Five Dignities)

TriAstra computes every layer of essential dignity (not just rulership) and totals them into a weighted dignity score per planet, surfacing which planets support you by nature and which require conscious compensation.

What Essential Dignity (The Five Dignities) Means for You

A planet with strong essential dignity expresses itself naturally; a peregrine or fallen planet works but requires more effort. This is why two people with the same Sun sign can have wildly different relationships with that Sun.
