Sthana Bala (Positional Dignity)

A planet's positional dignity in Vedic astrology — the graded spectrum from exaltation through moolatrikona, own sign, friend, neutral, enemy, and debilitation.

What is Sthana Bala (Positional Dignity)?

Vedic dignity is a graded spectrum, not a binary. From strongest to weakest: Uccha (exaltation), Moolatrikona (root-trine — a mild exaltation in the planet's preferred sign and degree range), Svakshetra (own sign), Mitra (friend's sign), Sama (neutral), Shatru (enemy's sign), and Neecha (debilitation). Each state modifies how the planet delivers its indications. Moolatrikona — often overlooked in Western treatments — is especially important: Jupiter in early Sagittarius, for example, gains moolatrikona dignity that Western essential dignity alone does not capture.
